Bud Grant Set The Bar For Not Quite Succeeding Very, Very High
By a wide margin, Bud Grant was the best football coach in Minnesota Vikings history. Bud Grant coached several hall-of-fame players, won multiple division titles, and brought his teams to four Super Bowls. Therein lies the problem. Bud Grant never won any of those Super Bowls.
However, Dennis Green quotes should be more memorable then what they are. Everybody remembers Jim Mora’s “playoffs” rant and describing the way his team played as “diddily-poo”. Yet, not everybody remembers that Dennis Green had his own series of ridiculous quotes. This is not the place to chronicle all of the magic that came out of Dennis Green’s mouth when he was a head football coach. Suffice it to say, his breakdown of the “Calcutta clipper” might honestly be described as the most unholy mixture of football and meteorological analysis ever conjured up by a mere human.
Dennis Green Quotes made their way into history, but not in a way one would consider flattering.
It would be nice to be able to reflect upon Bud Grant’s legacy without having to constantly qualify that legacy. It would also be nice to imagine that Bud Grant did not believe that Indians are destroying the environment. Regardless, Bud Grant is as good as it gets. And while he was successful, he never did win the sport’s ultimate prize. He got about as close to the finish line as one can get without actually crossing that line. The legacy of Bud Grant very much defines the Vikings.
